Watermelon Thief
I just pulled half of a watermelon from the fridge, only to discover that someone carved about 90% of the fleshy goodness from it before wrapping it up and returning it, as if it had never been touched. Seriously, we’re talking like an inch of fruit left on the rind, and even then the whole point to watermelon is the juicy red center, not the pink outer layers. Thief! And then to go and...

Runner's Salute
When I run, I nod or wave at fellow runners and cyclists. I do it when I’m biking too. It seems friendly and polite; I’m huffing and sweating, they’re huffing and sweating, we’re sharing whatever stretch of sidewalk or road at the moment, it would be borderline rude not to acknowledge the other’s presence. And yet that’s what many people do: ignore.

Consider Me a Convert
Well, I did it. Stubborn and hardheaded as I am, I went for 9.25 miles in my VFFs on Saturday. It was my “easy” week (this week it’s back to fifteen), so I figured why not.
Why not indeed. Nine and a quarter miles and not a hint of pain or discomfort, nor soreness after the fact. Effortless conversion.
Vibram really needs to start paying me for their marketing.

Sixty Years of Awesome
Today is Pops’s birthday. The man is celebrating six decades of awesomeness. I wrote that on the invitations for his party tomorrow night and he was all “I don’t know May May, awesomness? Isn’t that a little full of myself?” “Dad. Seriously.” “You’re right. I like it.”
Look at that guy. Who else rocks hair like that? And would...

Do VFFs Affect Speed?
So ever since I leaped from four to six and a half miles without incident in my VFFs, I’ve been thinking about racing in them. Or rather, I purchased them with the intention to one day race in them, but I’m thinking that day may be sooner than I anticipated.
I’m going to run six and a half in them again tonight, and I was planning on making the jump to ten on Saturday. ...

cryingisforsissies asked: Hey! I didn't realize that you were from NYC... I'm actually not hosting the race, I'm just trying to put it out there so that as many people who might be interested hear about it. Tomorrow will be my first 5K w VCTC, so I'll be sure to let you know how that goes. Other dates are: 7/8, 7/22, 8/5, 8/19. Would you be around then?

Roasted Eggplant & Tomatoes
The other night I made roasted eggplant and tomatoes for dinner. It’s a breeze to make, and literally requires zero effort. Rinse your veggies, spear the eggplant (but not the tomatoes) a few times, arrange them on a baking sheet, and throw the whole thing in the oven at 425 or so. Walk away, and depending on how done you like your roasted veggies, pull them out anywhere between sixty and...

Cruisin' for a Brusin'
Went for my longest barefoot run to date this morning — 2.2 miles. I wanted to go for this yesterday, but it got late fast and after last week’s sizzle I opted to skip it. Noon pavement = yeeeeeow!
Woke up early, with plenty of time to eat and loaf and get out shortly after 9am. (Funemployment dictates that mornings are for relaxed pace and loafing. Can’t rush the...

Passive-Aggressive? Annoyed? Lackluster?
The other day I called my mom from the house. The “from the house” distinction is necessary to appreciate her response; rather than her caller i.d. displaying my name it showed the house number, and she assumed it was my sister. Our conversation went as follows:
Pun [with enough cheer and enthusiasm to shame a cheerleader]: Hi!!! Me: Hi Pun. Pun [said cheer and enthusiasm...

Kap Kun Ka
We went out for Thai tonight, a sort of peace-offering from my father to me, in a feeble attempt to mollify me after siding with my sexist, arrogant, inconsiderate, loud-mouthed, asinine, fuckwit brother yesterday. Again. Because he is the Prodigal Son that can do no wrong. I’ll spare you the details.
Dinner was good, aside from the nonstop word-vomiting from the shit-for-brains end of...

Game On
This was a week of firsts for me in the running department:
First VFF run of significant mileage — six and a half miles and not a hint of soreness.
First time I’ve ever ran sixteen miles. Thoroughly worn out, but not a total wreck. Managed to finish strong, and felt better overall than when I went for fourteen. Progress. Proud of myself.
First marathon! Finally got the official...

Garlicky Hummus
I’ve been craving hummus lately. I almost bought some the other day and stopped myself — I can make hummus at home. With fresh, wholesome ingredients and far better nutrition content.
I’ve been thinking that for weeks, and am constantly forgetting to actually make it. Thursday night I was just about to drift off to sleep and went “Shit! Hummus!” and rolled my ass...

Ask Me Tomorrow
I was bad and ran six and a half miles in my VFFs tonight. In other words, blatantly disregarded both Michael’s and Brenna’s sage advice. Why? Because I’m stubborn. And asking for it. As always.
Aside from my “tempo run” turning into a complete slog (warning: don’t click that link unless you’re prepared to deal with some serious whining), my feet and...

Sunscreen Debacle
I’m having a hard time with sunscreens. It’s not new, it’s something I’ve battled with for far too long. I’m exhausted. And frustrated. And bitched about it to my heart’s content on In It To Gym It.
Def go over there and check out my ranting/conundrum. And then get your asses back here and let me in on your sunscreen secrets. Pretty please. I’m...

Wonderful Weekend
I spent the weekend in DC, an impromptu trip thrown together at the last minute so I could accompany my friend Raphe to a wedding. I’ve known Raphe for years; he was my next door neighbor when I lived in Penn Quarter. He said something in passing about needing a date — I warned him to watch what he said or I’d be on the next plane. Poor boy didn’t realize I was serious.

Stuffed Peppers
A Tumblr I follow mentioned making stuffed peppers the other day and apparently that planted the nugget in the back of my mind. While standing with Pun in the produce section debating what to make for dinner tonight, stuffed peppers came back to me. She was reluctant at first, citing how much work they’d be. Then she remembered I do the cooking and she does the eating and that was that.

Twilight 5K
Yesterday I ran the Twilight 5K, a neighborhood “fun run” Footworks puts on every year.
I finished at 23:12 (a 7:29 pace!), which is a full two minutes faster than I had given myself credit for. And I snagged third in my age group. STOKED.
I paced with Wayne, whom I met at Miami Runners Club and often pace with. I asked if he wanted to go fast, he said yah. Yeah well, that gun...

Who's The Boss: Does Gender Matter?
My first post for Femme Writes is today, and I couldn’t be more excited to contribute to such a fantastic site. Like In It To Gym It, it’s a fledgling site just starting out and putting down its roots. And I’m thrilled to be involved in the process.
Today’s topic is “Women in the Workplace,” and while I currently have no workplace, that hasn’t always...

Dave Eggers on "Selling Out" vs. "Saying Yes" →
austinkleon:
This e-mail is making the rounds. I’d reblog it from someone, but that would seem pointless. What I really like are the bits about the Flaming Lips and “saying yes”:
The thing is, I really like saying yes. I like new things, projects, plans, getting people together and doing something, trying something, even when it’s corny or stupid. I am not good at saying no. And I do not get...

Omnivores Are Selfish Bastards →
Raising all those animals for you to eat is unsustainable and absolutely ruinous to the planet. Don’t hate me for saying it—the U.N. did! And of course the comments, even in the good old smarty-trousers Guardian, quickly devolve into meat-eaters demanding that people leave them alone because it’s not their fault the Earth is going to burn up in a toxic flameball by the end of the century; blame...

Catch Two-Two
This morning at tennis (which was beyond disgustingly hot and humid — we’re talking trapped in an inferno where EVERYTHING I was wearing was dripping profusely in sweat) I heard something that I had to stop myself from laughing at outright.
Janet (who is British) said to Carmen (who is not), “well yes, it is a bit of a catch two-two.” I’m sorry, a what?

Boogie Turns 23
Booger turned 23 today. We celebrated with cinnamon banana pancakes this morning and boston cream pie this evening. (Flavors of both per request by the birthday girl — banana flavored anything and the words “cream” and “pie” in the same sentence do nothing for me.)
And yes, that’s the boston cream pie. Looks like a hideous goopy disaster, I know. ...
