A coworker of mine starts all her emails thusly: “Hi.” Not “Hi Meg.” Or “Dear Meg.” Or “Hi Extremely Competent Person.” Just, “Hi.” And it’s not just me. She emails everyone this way — the people she manages, her supervisor, our CEO, outside contacts, EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER. “HI.”
Am I old fashioned? Tightly wound? Are not people’s names an important part of communicating? I find it incredibly irksome and unprofessional. “Hi.” I rather you not bother with a greeting at all and get on with it. What can I do for you, you mannerless twat?
I should clarify, with personal correspondence I couldn’t care less. Professional correspondence, show some fucking respect.
Can I get an aye? All in favor?
